At Little Star Montessori the classroom is made up of children of mixed ages from 2½ to 6, where they learn from each other. Younger children get a chance to look ahead and see what is coming next by watching the older children. Older children have the opportunity to reinforce their knowledge by sharing it with the younger child.

They learn to get along with children of different ages and abilities, to respect each other’s work and space and to treat each other with courtesy. They also take an active role in maintaining the classroom by putting materials away in their proper place, ready for the next child to use. They are treated with respect and dignity.

Classroom activities

The Prepared Environment
In addition to being a child-centred community, the prepared environment is  designed to facilitate maximum independent learning and exploration by the child. The adult is to perfect the environment while the child works to perfect herself/himself.
 Working peacefully in the classroom

At Little Star Montessori all of the furniture is child size and all of the materials are scaled to fit the physical dimension of a preschooler’s body. The space is usually divided into distinct areas : practical life, sensorial, mathematics, language, geography. history, botany and zoology. It is important to remember that no subject is taught in isolation. The Montessori preschool  curriculum is interdisciplinary and interactive. Although much of the work at this stage of development is done individually, often children enjoy working at an activity with friends.

Sometimes the entire class is involved in group activity such as story telling, singing, music and movement, puppetry and percussion. Here the child experiences a blend of freedom and self discipline in a place especially designed for her development.
